Dry bean improvement through the use of tepary bean

Objective
To evaluate available cultivated tepary germplasm and identify the potential for using candidates from among them in dry bean breeding programs in Western Canada.
Outcome
There is evidence of increased frost tolerance among the tepary bean genotypes tested. In addition, the seed yield data indicate that the tepary germplasm does contain genetic mechanisms that can enable them to adapt to Saskatchewan growing conditions. Experience in interspecies hybridization from other projects suggests that incorporating genes from tepary into dry bean should be feasible.
