Lead Investigator(s) Institution
University of Saskatchewan - Dept. of Bioresource Policy, Business and Economics
Objective
To assess new breeding techniques and to provide insights as to how Canadian regulatory agencies will interpret these new techniques. To assess the economic impact of new pulse varieties and the effects on international pulse trade.
Outcome
This study provided information on the continuing marketing challenges presented by the wide variety of approaches to the regulation of genetically modified organisms, particularly with reference to the new (targeted mutagenesis) technologies for plant improvement. While applicable to crop species generally, the information will be relevant in going forward with either transformation approaches or newer approaches to pulse improvement.
