Improving the value of field peas for human consumption markets

Objective
To characterize the genetic basis of several visual quality traits affecting the market value of field pea. To identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling the visual quality traits of pea seeds. To understand the molecular and biochemical mechanism of the expression of several visual quality traits in field pea.
Outcome
The four quality traits evaluated all displayed a continuous range of expression among the relevant RILs, with moderate to high heritability. DNA markers will be developed that will allow selection for key quantitative trait loci (QTLs). These markers will facilitate breeding pea varieties with improved visual quality for export and domestic markets.
