Royalties are coming for pulses in Saskatchewan. Growers will have the option to continue growing historical royalty-free varieties, or upgrade to newer royalty-bearing ones. Small global crops like peas and lentils are limited in return to large companies, but are necessary to spur increased competition and innovation within variety development. With royalties coming, new varieties will need to be that much stronger for growers to adopt them – pushing the bar for innovation. It is in SPG’s best interest to ensure that cost of seed is not a barrier for adoption.
