• Chickpeas have very high levels of resistance to Aphanomyces root rot.
• Their heat and drought tolerance is similar to that of lentils. 
• New herbicide-tolerant varieties of chickpea are now available. 
• Chickpeas are at lower risk for insect damage because of acids secreted by the leaves, stems, and pods that deter insect feeding. 
• Chickpeas are best suited to the brown and dark brown soil zones in Saskatchewan.
