Production
- The fenugreek market in Western Canada has grown from just a few hundred acres in the early 2010s to 2,800 acres in 2016, with more recent estimates of 4,000–5,000 acres.
- India is the world’s largest producer and consumer of fenugreek, but many other countries, including Egypt and Türkiye, also produce it.
Processing & Uses
- Fenugreek is a little-known crop with both culinary and nutraceutical uses. Fenugreek is used in whole form or as a spice or flavour additive in South Asian cooking. It is also manufactured in tincture and tablet form as a health-food supplement. New industrial uses, including as a hydrocolloid in mining operations, have emerged.
Market Opportunities
- The market for fenugreek in Canada is small, so the crop should not be grown on speculation. A production contract with a trusted buyer would be the best path, as buyers and end-users are currently limited.
- The market is still small, but given the variety of uses, new market opportunities should enable further growth.
