Research Objective

Project Description

To collect pulse genetic resources from the Crimean peninsula which have relevance for Canadian pulse breeders, specifically genetically diverse material of wild relatives of cultivated lentil; to regenerate germplasm collected during an expedition in 2005 on the territory of Ukraine.

Outcome

The germplasm collected during this mission contains accessions that can contribute to current breeding programs in pulse crops and other species. The collected material is expected to enrich Canada with new resources of disease resistance, heat tolerance, drought tolerance, soil salinity tolerance and other valuable economic-biological traits. It will be used as raw material for crop improvement and the germplasm collected will be entered in the gene bank collections of both participating countries. The germplasm and related information will be available without restrictions to the national and international community of researchers and plant breeders.
