Description

CDC Forest is a green cotyledon, semi-leafless field pea variety. In 11 years of testing in the co-op and regional trials in Saskatchewan, CDC Forest is the top yielding green pea currently available in both the north and south. It yields 3% higher than CDC Greenwater in the south and 15% higher in the north (Table 1).CDC Forest has PBR’91 protection.

Statistical analysis of 9 years of long-term RVT data ranked CDC Forest 3rd from the top for yield in the south and 5th in the north among 8 historical and new green pea varieties (Figure 1).

Strengths

  • High yield (greater than CDC Amarillo)
  • Yield stability over different soil zones
  • Powdery mildew resistance

Neutral

  • Good lodging resistance
  • Medium vine length
  • Medium maturity
  • Medium seed size (equal to CDC Amarillo)
  • Round seed shape (blockier than CDC Striker, rounder than Cooper)
  • Low seed coat breakage per cent
  • Moderate cooking time
  • Fair resistance to Fusarium and Mycosphaerella

Weaknesses

  • Rated ‘fair’ for bleaching
