Description

CDC Redmoon is currently the highest yielding small red lentil with proven performance both in yield trial testing and in field production. In 10 years of testing in the Co-op and Regional trials in Saskatchewan (Table 1), CDC Redmoon yielded 114% of CDC Maxim in the brown and dark brown soil zones and 104% in the black and dark gray soil zones. Seed coat colour, cotyledon colour, flowering time, maturity, plant height, disease tolerance and seed weight are similar to CDC Maxim. Seed diameter is slightly less than that of CDC Maxim but seed thickness is higher making CDC Redmoon more suitable for lentil dehulling. CDC Redmoon has PBR’91 protection.

Strengths

  • Very high yield
  • Proven field production performance
  • Seed thickness is greater than CDC Maxim

Neutral

  • Similar agronomic, maturity and disease resistance characteristics compared to CDC Maxim

Weaknesses

  • Not tolerant to imidazolinone herbicides

Analysis of 61 site years of RVT data ranked CDC Redmoon in top spot (Figure 1). CDC Redmoon maintained this ranking in 4 out of 9 locations (Rosthern, Hodgeville, Scott, Swift Current). CDC Redmoon also ranked high in Limerick, Elrose and Saskatoon. At all of these sites, no varieties were significantly higher yielding than CDC Redmoon and most older varieties yielded significantly lower (CDC Maxim, CDC Dazil, CDC Scarlet, CDC Imax). At some locations, CDC Redmoon yielded significantly higher than CDC Proclaim, CDC Impulse and CDC Carmine. CDC Redmoon has shown its adaptation to a broad range of geographic locations in SK and is proven to be a top yielding variety.
