Description
CDC Rider (4506-4) is a mid-maturing high-yielding green pea. In seven years of testing in the Co-op and regional trials in Saskatchewan, it yielded 101% in the south and 99% in the north vs. the check variety CDC Amarillo (Table 1). It has very good standability, slightly better than CDC Limerick and CDC Raezer. Protein is similar to CDC Amarillo check and CDC Forest. It has improved resistance to fusarium root rot vs. CDC Limerick, CDC Spruce, and CDC Forest and improved resistance to mycosphaerella blight compared to CDC Forest, CDC Raezer and CDC Spruce. It has good seed characteristics and is rated good for seed coat breakage and bleaching. CDC Rider is showing improved standability and disease package compared to CDC Forest while maintaining top yields for green peas. CDC Rider has PBR’91 protection.
Statistical analysis of 9 years of long-term RVT data ranked CDC Rider 4th from the top for yield in the south and 3rd in the north among 8 historical and new green pea varieties (Figure 1).
Strengths
- High yield
- Good seed characteristic package – rated good for:
- Resistance to seed coat breakage;
- Resistance to dimpling;
- Bleaching;
- Excellent lodging resistance; better than CDC Limerick, similar to CDC Greenwater
- Rated moderately resistant to Fusarium root rot – better than CDC Forest, CDC Limerick, or CDC Spruce
- Powdery mildew resistance
Neutral
- Medium maturity
- Medium-long vine length
- Medium seed weight, similar to CDC Amarillo
