Description
CDC Orkney (1748-1) is a high-yielding kabuli chickpea. In 5 years of testing in the Chickpea Regional Variety Trials (2019 – 2023), CDC Orkney yielded 110% and 108% of the historical check variety Amit in the brown and dark brown soil zones respectively. CDC Orkney yields similar to the current check, CDC Lancer, in the brown soil zone but has a 3% yield advantage in the dark brown soil zone (Table 1). Compared to the dominant variety CDC Leader (in terms of acreage in SK), CDC Orkney yields 5% higher in the brown soil zone and 14% higher in the dark brown soil zone. Statistical analysis of 6 years of long-term Regional Variety Trial data ranked CDC Orkney first for yield in both the brown and dark brown soil zones among 8 historical and new kabuli chickpea varieties (Figure 1). CDC Orkney is rated “medium-late” for maturity. In 5 years of regional variety trial data, CDC Orkney matured same as CDC Leader but 2 days later than CDC Lancer (Table 2). CDC Orkney has imazamox herbicide tolerance (Solo ADV as per PMRA label registration). Seed size is smaller than CDC Leader. CDC Orkney has PBR’91 protection.
Strengths
- Herbicide tolerance (imazamox)
- High yielding Kabuli chickpea
Neutral
- Similar agronomic and maturity characteristics compared to CDC Leader
- Similar disease resistance as CDC Leader
Weaknesses
- Smaller seed size than CDC Leader
