Description
Kabuli chickpea variety CDC Pearl is a smaller seeded kabuli chickpea with improved resistance to Ascochyta blight and imazamox herbicide tolerance (Solo ADV as per PMRA label registration). In 2 years of head-to-head testing in the regional chickpea trials (2019 – 2020), compared to the check “Amit”, CDC Pearl yielded 104% in both the brown and dark brown soil zones (Table 1). This is lower than the recent kabuli varieties CDC Lancer and CDC Orkney, however the main advantage of Pearl is its improved disease resistance. This variety also has earlier maturity compared to CDC Leader and CDC Orion. Seed size is smaller than other kabuli varieties making seeding more economical. Application for PBR’91 protection for CDC Pearl has been submitted.
Strengths
- Herbicide tolerance (imazamox)
- Improved resistance to Ascochyta blight
- Earlier maturity vs. CDC Leader
Neutral
- Similar agronomic and maturity characteristics compared to CDC Palmer and CDC Orkney
Weaknesses
- Lower yield than CDC Lancer
