Description
Kabuli chickpea variety CDC Orkney (1748-1) is a high-yielding kabuli chickpea. In 2 years of head-to-head testing in the Chickpea Regional Variety Trials (2019 – 2020), CDC Orkney yielded 108% and 106% of the check variety Amit in the brown and dark brown soil zones respectively (Table 1). In the head-to-head comparison, it yielded similar to CDC Palmer and 6% higher than CDC Leader. CDC Orkney matures 1 day earlier than CDC Leader and has the advantage of imazamox herbicide tolerance (Solo ADV as per PMRA label registration). This variety has improved resistance to Ascochyta blight vs. CDC Leader. Seed size is smaller than CDC Palmer or CDC Leader. Application for PBR’91 protection for CDC Orkney has been submitted.
Strengths
- Herbicide tolerance (imazamox)
- High yielding herbicide tolerant Kabuli chickpea
Neutral
- Similar agronomic and maturity characteristics compared to CDC Palmer and CDC Leader
- Similar disease resistance as CDC Leader
Weaknesses
- Smaller seed size than CDC Palmer
