Research Objective

Project Description

To characterize the genetic basis of several visual quality traits affecting the market value of field pea; to identify molecular markers for traits affecting visual quality of pea seeds; to improve the selection capability for field pea varieties with improved grade potential.

Outcome

The four quality traits evaluated all displayed a continuous range of expression among the relevant RILs, with moderate to high heritability. DNA markers will be developed that will allow selection for key quantitative trait loci (QTLs). These markers will facilitate breeding pea varieties with improved visual quality for export and domestic markets.
